Wrestling:

Three members of Robinson’s wrestling team went to the State Championships on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimee, Fla. Devin Jandura (‘19) placed 4th, and Jaquan Jackson (‘18) placed 6th. Jayden Alvarez (‘19) didn’t place, but won a match.

“States didn’t go as I wanted it, but taking fourth is an improvement,” Jandura said. “Next year I expect nothing less than first.”

The Championship marked the end of the 2017-18 wrestling season.

Boys Lacrosse:

The Knights (1-3) had a 1-1 week, kicking it off with a 12-5 loss to Tampa Catholic (3-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The Knights had five individual scorers for the night, but the last shot by Cameron Spence (’21) meant just a little bit more to the team.

“Honestly, Tuesday, you would have thought we won the game,” Brian Young Jr. (’19) said. “[When Spence] ripped a last second shot… the culture of the team and game changed.”

The Knights took the loss with their heads held high and carried the momentum into their 9-7 win over Jefferson (0-5) on Thursday, March 1.

The Knights will play Alonso (0-4) on Tuesday, March 6 at Robinson High School (6311 S. Lois Ave., 33616).

Girls Lacrosse:

The Lady Knights (2-2) matched the boys lacrosse team with a 1-1 week, including a 14-11 loss to Tampa Catholic (3-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 27 and a 15-5 win over Jefferson (0-2) the following Thursday, March. 1.

“[Tampa Catholic] was a rough game,” Co-captain Carolina Cassedy said. “We were up 8-2 the first half… they kept scoring and our defense wasn’t stopping them. I guess we got really down on ourselves.”

The Lady Knights will face Alonso (0-4) at home on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. (6311 S. Lois Ave., 33616).

Softball:

The Lady Knights (6-4) snatched a 10-0 win over Lennard (2-9) on Tuesday, Feb 27, and were able to pull out another win against Jefferson (4-3) Thursday, March 1 by a score of 11-7. The team hopes to keep this winning streak in their next game against Spoto (0-8).

“The Lennard game was a nice break from playing a bunch of 8A and 9A schools in the past few weeks,” Claire White (’18) said. “The Jefferson game was good competition and it was fun to play a closer game. Our team is very strong in the sense of keeping a good attitude throughout the entire game and not giving up until the last out is made.”

The Lady Knights will face Spoto on Tuesday, March 7 at Robinson High School (6311 S. Lois Ave., 33616).

Baseball:

The Knights (1-3) bounced back after their 0-2 start to the season, claiming their first win of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 27, but could not claim the win in their first district matchup.

The Knights snuck out with a 7-6 win against Lennard (3-2) on Tuesday, ending the night with eight hits on offense and five strikeouts on defense.

On Thursday, March 1, the Knights fell 5-1 to Jefferson (3-1). Robinson was unable to score until the bottom of the seventh and only had five hits throughout the night. The Dragons had 10.

“We play in a very difficult district,” Carter Fair (’19) said. “We hit a lot of balls hard the last couple of games, sooner or later they’re bound to get through if we keep hitting them hard.”

The Knights will face Spoto on Tuesday, March 8, at Spoto High School (8538 Eagle Palm Dr, Riverview, FL 33578).

Track and Field:

Robinson’s track team traveled to Leto on Saturday, March 3 to compete in the Nash Higgins tournament, along with several other high schools in Hillsborough County. The team placed in the top ten in five events: Mason Gonzalez (‘18), 3rd in boys pole vault relay, Destiny Thomas (‘19), 6th in girls discus throw relay, Kyle Creech (‘18), 6th in boys shot put relay, and 3rd in girls and boys 4×1600 relay.

Thomas, who placed 9th at states last season, was more self-critical of her own performance this week.

“I didn’t perform as well as I’d like,” Thomas said. “But I do expect to make it to states again this year.”

The Knights will compete in there next meet on Tuesday, March 6 at Steinbrenner High School (5575 Lutz Lake Fern Rd., 33558).
