Should the Buc get Cut?
January 18, 2019
This past December, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired Head Coach Dirk Koetter after going 5-11 throughout the season. Two staffers face off to debate whether or not it really was time for Koetter to go.
It wasn’t time to cut Koetter
As a beaming Bucs fan and aggressively passionate feminist, I’ve found myself morally torn throughout this season. And it’s left me with a huge dislike for Jameis Winston. Yes, he served his suspension, yet he continues to make wrong life choices on top of not playing up to the hype that continuously comes with a first round draft pick, even if that was in 2015. I was absolutely appalled when I found out that Winston will rake in $21 million next season and Koetter will get kicked to the curb.
Sure, the Bucs had a losing season, but what’s new? I was one week old when we won the Super Bowl in 2001. The Bucs haven’t had a winning season since 2008.
So I don’t think the blame can be put on Koetter when, yet again, we can’t seem to have a successful run. In fact, Koetter has had the best winning record since John Gruden, who left the team a decade ago.
Don’t get me wrong, I do believe that Koetter wasn’t perfect, but I think he had a strong chemistry with the team, one that would only get stronger over time. And I don’t think the Bucs continued to lose due to his inability to to coach effectively.
Both backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Winston have strong arms, yet lack the ability to run the ball far when needed. We also don’t utilize the backfield enough, even when our running backs, specifically Jacquizz Rodgers and Ronald Jones II, bring immense speed to the table.
Lastly, for some reason Buccaneers love to be injured. We just couldn’t keep players off the Injured List this season. Koetter couldn’t control that.
Yes, the Bucs only won five games this season; I’m not saying that’s good. But, I think that too many other factors played a role in the losing season and certainly don’t think it was time for Koetter to go- especially before Winston.
Hiring is a new coach is a smart move for the Bucs
As an emotionally exhausted Bucs fan, I am relieved that they moved on from Dirk Koetter and signed Bruce Arians as their new head coach. It was time for a fresh start and Arians is perfect for the job.
History shows that Arians can lead a team and produce wins, as he only had one losing season in his five years as the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals, while he made the playoffs in two of those seasons. He served as offensive coordinator on several great teams as well, working with some of the best quarterbacks of the past 15 years.
Arians has also brought along two promising coordinators that should help put the talent into the best positions to win games. New defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has had his hands on some solid defenses whether he was a head coach or a defensive coordinator. New offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has very little coaching experience, but has received praise from Arians as a great offensive mind.
Dirk Koetter had his chance with this team, but just failed to produce any promising results. In his three seasons as our head coach, he won just 19 games while losing 28 games, with only one barely winning season.
The defense under Koetter was just depressing to watch, as teams could pass the ball down the field whenever they pleased. The offense got a lot of yards, but that did not translate to a lot of points due to Koetter’s terrible play calling in the redzone. He was supposed to nurture quarterback Jameis Winston into a star quarterback, but Winston regressed into a league laughing stock.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made the correct choice in making Koetter walk the proverbial plank and getting a seasoned coach like Arians to put this ship back on the correct path towards success.
