“Wordle”: The Frustratingly Addictive New Word Game
Green yellow and grey have never been more infuriating.

Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, N.Y. noticed his partner’s love for word games. So in October of last year, he created “Wordle”, a daily word guessing game. Similar to a crossword puzzle, “Wordle” can only be played once a day and resets at midnight.
It’s a fairly simple concept- you’re given six chances to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, the tiles will change color depending on how close you are to guessing it. The tiles will turn one of three colors: green, yellow or gray. If the tile turns green, it means the letter is in the right spot. If the tile turns yellow, it means the letter is in the word but not in the right place. If the tile turns grey, then the letter is not used in the word at all. With these hints, you have to try and guess the Wordle and if you don’t… there’s always tomorrow.
Although “Wordle” is simple in nature, it’s already become a phenomenon- with over 300,000 people playing every single day in just the span of a few months. Even famous celebrities such as Jimmy Fallon have been showing off their Wordles in tweets consisting of cryptic cube emojis.
It took me a little bit to get the hang of “Wordle”, but now the game has got me checking my phone every morning ready for the new challenge. It’s a little daunting picking your first word, but I recommend choosing one that has three vowels and two consonants. I personally have been using “adieu”, but you can choose any word you like such as orate, media, radio and many more. Some people even use “farts” so it’s really up to personal preference.
“Wordle” has really changed the game (no pun intended) when it comes to word guessing games. It pushes me to really think out of the 5×6 box and it’s no shock it’s garnered so much attention in such a short amount of time. I urge you to try “Wordle” out for yourself and maybe even challenge friends to do the same. Happy guessing!
