Starting this letter feels surreal, and honestly, makes me feel a little old. You really don’t know how fast time flies until you’re standing at the end of the road thinking about all the memories you’ve made. And I’m grateful for the chance to express how much Knight Writers has shaped me into the person I am.
I joined the staff in my sophomore year, looking for an opportunity to beef up my student resume. I began writing, and as the weeks went on, I wondered why I hadn’t yet found my “identity” as a journalist. Being part of a staff so open-minded and welcoming helped me find that identity. As I wrote more stories, I became more comfortable expressing my true opinions and letting my personality shine through my writing. These skills not only carried me through my journey on staff but made me a better student in general.
As my time as a Knight Writer continued, I began to make a place for myself on staff, eventually taking on leadership positions. Getting the opportunity to welcome people I saw myself in made me appreciate even more being a part of something bigger than myself.
Room 1A-207 is one of the very few things I’ll be sad to part with as I graduate. I will never forget the countless lessons I’ve learned in Mrs. Webster’s (3) classrooms. As cliche as it may sound, I walked into journalism for the first time alone, and I’m now leaving with a family. Thank you for everything, Knight Writers.
