Staying after school in the fall, one can expect to catch a glimpse of flags and sparkly outfits. Robinson’s color and winter guard, better known as Starlets, has become known for their presence in the stands and on the field. As the school year comes to a close, the Starlets will be holding an interest meeting for prospective members on April 26 at 5:30 p.m. in room 2201 (located in the foreign language building).

Compared to last season, the Starlets will benefit from relaxed COVID-19 restrictions. The upcoming season will feature a competitive style marching band show in contrast to 2020’s pep band-esque, with more time spent performing on the field.

“I hope more people will be showing up due to the fact that we have been recruiting more at our middle schools and theatre schools,” Siara Espejo, Starlets Sponsor and Director, said. “We’ve provided a Google Form registration, a new video, as well as flyers that we’ve been sending out, so hopefully we’re going to get some more people into the program when it’s at a more competitive state.”

For those unsure whether to join, Espejo expresses that there is no experience necessary in spinning, rifle, saber, flag and other skills. While often associated with solely extracurricular activities, Starlets also qualifies as a co-curricular activity. This means that students receive a grade—and GPA boost—for attending practices and competitions. Outside of the benefits on paper, Starlets aims to provide a sense of community for its members.

“I recommend Starlets because it teaches you determination and perseverance,” Captain Molly Tyler (’21) said. “When you look back after a performance, you always feel a lot of pride for what you’ve accomplished as a team.”

Auditions will be held next month, May 19-21 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Robinson auditorium. Prospective Starlets can RSVP to either or both of the two events here.
