Sounds of chirping birds, rustling leaves and calming water fill the air. People walk and bike, taking in the sights of the vast scenery. Welcome to MacDill 48 Park.
Following this previous Veteran’s Day weekend, the City of Tampa opened the new public park. The park includes a mile-long walking/biking trail, benches, a huge pond, and generous tree covering throughout.
While the name is quite dull, the park is not. Surrounded by the stunning elements of nature, the park provides a near authentic outdoor experience. From the wildlife to the scenery, to the silence, the park is the perfect spot for some relaxation.
The park wasn’t only created for public enjoyment, however, as the park’s features and location aid with several issues in the area. In an article from the City of Tampa’s official website, the park’s various benefits are explained.
“The stormwater pond in the middle of the park will allow the city to maximize flood relief within the southeast portion of the Lower Peninsula Watershed, which includes most of the area south of El Prado Boulevard. The project also includes more than 12,000 linear feet of box culverts, pipes, and drainage inlets. Green infrastructure has been added to reduce the discharge of nutrients, oils, sediments, and floating debris into Hillsborough Bay. This is an ideal of the type of stormwater infrastructure that could provide significant benefits in flood-prone parts of the city,” the article reads.
MacDill 48 is located right next to Skyview Park, another public park that includes a football field, a basketball/pickleball court and seating. Additionally, Gadsden Park is a mile and a half south of MacDill 48.
“It was nice and peaceful,” Bea Hirschel (’27) said. She visited the park in December. “It was just very calming.”
Due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton there are some fallen down trees and branches. However, the path is clear and safe.
Going for a walk in the park was very enjoyable. It was very quiet, not too busy, and the view of the sunset was amazing.
