On Tues., February 18, Robinson’s lacrosse team walked out onto Jefferson’s field to play their first game of the season. The game was a shutout, with Robinson scoring 21 points opposed to Jefferson’s zero.

“I think we were all a little anxious before [the game] since it was the first one, but more than anything we were excited,” Owen Higgins (’21), one of the four team captains, said. “We headed into the game confident that Jefferson was a team we needed to beat and would get it done.”

Owen Higgins sports the #8 jersey, which holds a legacy at Robinson. Some of the most recent captains on the team have worn the number on their jerseys, and it has traditionally passed down to a leader every year.

“It’s honestly such an honor to wear #8 on my back and represent the guys before me who brought the program up from the ground,” Higgins said. “As number eight, I feel that it’s my duty to preserve the culture that has been created an that has lasted throughout the years, but more importantly to inspire hard work and passion for the game among my teammates.”

His brother, Tristan Higgins (’23), was the lead scorer, as he scored seven of the 22 goals during the game versus Jefferson.

“It was an amazing season opener and I can’t wait to see what opportunities unfold for the rest of the season,” T. Higgins said.

This year’s team is relatively young, with the midfield starting lineup being made up solely of juniors and sophomores. Only one senior stands on the starting line-up; defense player Nick Rogers.

The majority of the team have been playing together for the last two years, and their team bond has been a key focus as it is vital to their success during games.

“The guys have been playing together all throughout summer, all throughout fall. The chemistry they have right now is very fluid,” said Eric Smithers, the head coach of the boys lacrosse team. “In lacrosse it’s very much about the flow of things, and not so much on the skill level of plays, so I think that’s the biggest thing that sets us apart. Our guys just have a big team chemistry and I think that will take us far this year.”

Players are enthusiastic about the rest of the season, and intend of focusing on goals to be successful as a team.

“This year I really want to step up as a face-off midfielder and grow as a leader going into next year’s season,” Matthew Brown (’22) said. “As a whole, our goal, like every year, is to win out our division.”
