Kyla Martens

Kyla Martens, Staff Writer

Kyla Martens is a sophomore at Robinson and a staff writer for the Knightwriters. This is her first year on staff.

Martens was drawn to journalism out of a love for writing, and she is interested in both opinion stories and reviews. As a film lover, she wants to be able to review new movies, and would like to write book reviews on the myriad of genres she is familiar with. Although she has enjoyed the books she’s read so far for the IB program, her favorite novel is Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Brönte, and she is currently spending her time with “The Rose Club” by Kate Quinn

Akin to her love of reading, her favorite subject in school is English, as it allows her to explore the deeper meaning of books and build on her writing skills.

“I love going to Socratic seminars and having discussions about whatever book we are reading… It’s also an excuse to force me to read and annotate new books,” Martens said, “I love flipping through pages and seeing all the colorful annotations.”

On the other hand, her interest in film is a bit more eclectic. She watches films of all genres; action, comedy, romance, so long as she finds them interesting. Her favorite movie of all time, however, is Dirty Dancing.

“It’s one of those films that just sucks you in… you’re instantly captivated,” Martens said.

Looking forward into the year, Martens would like to get more involved with clubs, school activities, and her friends. Ideally, she would like to join film and book club so she could talk to others with the same interests as her.

After high school, Martens expresses some uncertainty as to what she would like to do. Although she doesn’t have a specific career or college in mind, she displays interest in pursuing the arts and literature at a higher level.

“I used to want to go to Colombia until all of the controversies… It’s unfortunate because it used to be my dream school,” Martens said. “I would love to have an English degree for the sake of talking about books with other people who love them, but I couldn’t see myself going into any English professions.”
