The Oscars is not only an award show, but also a place where artists get to flaunt their best outfits out for the world to see. The red carpet looks tend to stick to elegant gowns or sophisticated suits. This year was no different; like every year, many celebrities added their own personal twist to their outfits with both colors, patterns, and brands. However, these celebrities stuck out to me because each of their looks seemed to represent something, whether it was individuality, a voice for unrecognized people, or body image.
Saorise Ronan wore a beautiful back and lilac gown. The gown had a peplum waistline adding a hint of cream to the look. The top half of her outfit is all black with a low plunging V-Neck showing a more simple look to contrast with her lilac, almost holographic looking, skirt. Ronan was very minimalistic with her jewelry. She wore dangly earrings and large chunky rings, but no necklace to maintain the integrity of the neckline. Ronan promoted sustainability as the top of her Gucci dress was recycled material from her Golden Globe’s look.
Billy Porter is known for his extravagant carpet wear, and the Oscars were no different. Porter paired a high neck, metallic gold top with feather detailing with a orange snake pattered skirt. He finished his look off with chunky, rose gold lace up boots. He added small gold bracelets to add an elegant detail while remaining simplistic to allow his eccentric outfit to stand out.
Natalie Portman made a statement this Oscars with her outfit that acted as a tribute to female directors who weren’t recognized for their work at this years award show. Portman wore a mesh colored dress with a small black body suit under it. The mesh layer had a very intricate design of gold flakes. Portman accessorized with a gold rope belt and simple gold hoop earrings. The major piece in her outfit was a black cape that she draped over her shoulder that had the names of female directors who weren’t nominated embroidered onto it.
Spike Lee put together a very colorful outfit for the red carpet. Lee paired a full purple suit with a bluish-purple shirt and a purple checkered tie. To accessorize, Lee wore gold Jordan’s coordinating with gold brass knuckles spelling out “HATE” on one hand and “LOVE” on the other. Lee completed his look with a purple, conductor-looking hat to match his suit.
Billie Eilish is known for her more baggy outfits that she wears to prevent the media from labeling her body. Eilish didn’t disappoint with a oversized white Chanel suit. The suit featured gold and black broaches. She accessorized with lace gloves with Chanel in large black letters and chunky gold chokers and rings. Eilish utilized her hair as an accessory by contrasting her mainly monochrome outfit with her neon green and black hair.
The red carpet is a great opportunity for celebrities to show off their style. This year, many celebrities used their outfits, not only to show off their style, but also to promote issues like sustainability, peace, and standing up for under appreciated film makers.
