It’s truly a Pop summer. Charli XCX released “Brat”. Billie Eilish released “Hit Me Hard and Soft”. Sabrina Carpenter ended the season with a bang releasing “Short n’ Sweet”. An up and coming artist, Carpenter first became famous through her career as a child actor. She played multiple rows in films but landed her starring role on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World. Throughout her life Carpenter has been displays her love of singing by posting homemade covers to her Youtube channel before signing her first record deal at only 12 years old. Now Carpenter releases her sixth studio album on August 23. The songs follow a pop style with several different genre influences.
Carpenter released a teaser single to the album called “Please Please Please” on June 6. The song reached number one rankings on Billboard’s Hot 100 becoming her first number one single. As well as peaking top ten in 18 other countries. The song follows a country rock genre describing the feeling of being in love with someone who you fear may embarrass you. In the music video, actor Barry Keoghan plays Carpenter’s love interest who repeatedly humiliates Carpenter’s ego.
“Taste” is the first song on Carpenter’s newly released album. The lyrics warn her Ex-partner’s on and off girlfriend that she’s still always be there in spirit. The song follows an up-beat tempo like “Please Please Please” and other songs throughout the album. Carpenter performed “…Taste” at this year’s VMAs dressed in a sparkly corset swung in by a swing. The rest of the performance included an alien whom she kisses and dances around with in space.
“Good Graces” is the third song on the album and my personal favorite. The lyrics follow Carpenter pleading to a boy that she won’t allow anything less than what she knows she deserves. The playful comments alongside Carpenter’s sassy melody makes the addictive tune extremely catchy. Carpenter’s ability to display the complexities of love ensures this song to be a pop hit this year.
Following the release of her new album, Carpenter sells out her “Short n’ Sweet Tour” that begins September 23 in Columbus, OH. Sabrina Carpenter completes the 2024 “Pop summer” perfectly. Surely securing her spot as an up and coming pop star.
