Just last week, the 2025 Oscar Nominations have been released and there are a few significant choices.
Firstly, Emilia Perez has nominations in almost every category. I truly do not understand the hype and support surrounding this movie, it seemed like a highly insensitive movie, completely missing the mark on the journey of becoming transgender. with original songs that made me want to stop listening to music. This distasteful movie already swept at the Golden Globes and the last thing it deserves is to take Oscars away from other hard working actors.
One nomination I am excited for though is Timothee Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown.” This movie truly transported me back to the 60’s and gave me a wonderful understanding of Bob Dylan and why he lived the way he did. Chalamet spent years getting into character, fully immersing himself according to Rolling Stone. I personally think he deserves this award more than any of the other actors for Best Actor.
Of course, another exciting nomination is Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Even though I had not previously seen Wicked, I immediately became obsessed. They spent so much time, working together, practicing even in COVID times and forming a beautiful sisterhood that can be seen through their perfectly blended harmonies. The movie Wicked is also a great reminder to fight for what’s right and not to blend in.
For animated movies, the Wild Robot got a few nominations, and I think this movie was already severely underhyped so I’m hopeful they win. For a children’s movie, the way they portrayed motherhood and environmental issues was so beautiful and I encourage everyone to watch. This movie had me in tears at multiple points, the animation was so beautiful, and the story was captivating and encouraging.
Finally, there has been discourse over whether Nicole Kidman deserved an Oscar for Babygirl. Personally, I believe Kidman has played roles like this before, and through the movie it didn’t seem like she was diving deep into the role, I didn’t feel empathetic or connected to her character, even when she had a cool opportunity to show people that women have wants and needs just the same as men.
To be honest, so many great movies came out in 2024, like Challengers and The Substance for example, and I don’t know how they will pick just one for any of the categories. You can find the full list on New York Post, I think mostly anyone could win and I would be happy as they are all so deserving.
