Kickflip is a seven-member group from K-Pop company, JYP Entertainment, consisting of members Kyehoon, Amaru, Dongwha, Juwang, Minje, Keiju, and Donghyeon. As it is the first time they have released anything, there is not much to say about them except for that many have high hopes for them. Many successful groups have emerged from their company, and I feel that Kickflip is no exception.
In my opinion, the best songs on the album are “Mama Said” and “Umm Great”. These tracks also happen to be the most popular and probably contributed strongly to their fanbase. The first song, “Mama Said” is feel-good and the lyrics are centered around youth. From what I understand, it’s about wanting to do what you want, and rebelling against your parent’s wishes. “Umm Great” was the first track that was released and (I think) it shows what they are going for sound-wise. The song is sonically very catchy and even though it sounds very simple, it’s my favorite.
The tracks, “Knock Knock” and “Like A Monster”, are ones that I both loved and kind of wished they had a little more to it. “Like A Monster” is overall a great song I just thought that it needed a bigger chorus. The build-up to it was so good that I was hoping for an even better, catchy hook. Despite all of this, it is genuinely good, and it’ll definitely grow on me. “Knock Knock” also has the exact same problem to me. It seems like just a song supposed to stay a little casual, but they also have amazing vocals in it that leaves room for more. Once again, I think that I will grow to love the song, it might just take a while.
Lastly, “WARRIORS” and “See You Tomorrow” are songs that don’t fully stick out to me much, but relistening makes me appreciate them. “WARRIORS” is very nice all-around, I just didn’t vibe with it at first. It is a very nostalgic song, that uses a lot of chanting, which really makes me like the song more. I wished that they could’ve put it at the end or near the end of the album because it just fits there better. In the end, I decided that it was a song I could really appreciate, and I will probably be listening to it more. The song “See You Tomorrow” is really interesting, it’s not exactly what I normally listen to. I don’t love how many times they switched up the beat, but that really was the only problem. What really made the song catch my eye was the vocals and the high notes towards the end, they were very impressive.
From my first impression of this group, I do believe they have the potential to become very popular within K-Pop. They do already have quite the following and are sure to gain more as they keep releasing more music. I will definitely be waiting to see how they grow and where they will go in the future.
