Sabrina Carpenter released her 7th studio album, “Man’s Best Friend,” and it’s an instant classic. Each song is special in its own way, yet still reminiscent of her other work.
Originally, Carpenter released “Manchild” over the summer as a single to tease the album, and to be honest, I was not fond of it. However, once the whole album was released, I perfectly saw her vision and now am recommending it to others. As per her usual music, this album has a slightly funny, very sarcastic and catchy feeling to it. She orders the album in a way that it seems like she can see right into a woman’s deepest thoughts, then instantly switches into an ironic song about hating men.
My personal favorite is “Sugar Talking,” because the beat grabs your attention instantly, and the message is relatable to girls everywhere. This might be more of a controversial pick, but personally, I’m more drawn to the overall mood of a song rather than the lyrics, so this one wins for me.
A close second would have to be “Don’t Worry I’ll Make You Worry.” I think it’s clever how Carpenter plays the instrumental softly and slowly, as this is going to be a ballad, then the lyrics reveal that she is going to cause trouble for whoever she dates. Even though most of her music is about men, she makes women all over the world remember the power they have within a relationship.
A third pick I would recommend just to get an overall feel for the album is “My Man on Willpower.” It has the classic retro-upbeat rhythm to it and her classic demasculinizing lyrics. Carpenter also paints the perfect picture of the messy and confusing dating world we seem to be living in.
The only critique I have of the album is its cover. I feel like even if it’s meant to be ironic, it still feeds into male fantasy and goes against a lot of the messages she sends throughout her music and its lyricism. I have seen other images from the photoshoot, and I personally think a few of the outtakes were cuter album covers.
Overall, this album is a very unserious, catchy listen for anyone who wants to instantly be in a better mood. After hearing her new music, I wouldn’t quite call her “Man’s Best Friend,” but she sure could be mine.
