When I first turned on Daniel Caesar’s new album, I didn’t have the highest hopes. My listening history with him has consisted of enjoying his popular songs, digging through his discography for more, and ending up not enjoying any of his other songs. However, as the first song began to play in this new album, I found myself eager for each song to play.
Caesar’s voice has always been extremely buttery and soothing. One song that really caught my attention was “Touching God (Feat. Yebba & Blood Orange).” Blood Orange is one of my favorite artists personally, and his features are always extremely distinguishable. The combination of Caesar’s soft voice and Blood Orange’s aesthetically pleasing instrumentals, this song was a really enjoyable listen.
Another song that I favored was “Baby Blue (Feat. Norwill Simmonds),” for its calming energy. The song opens with a comforting guitar melody, and the layered vocals Caesar incorporates are just heavenly. It feels like you’re floating away, and then around 2 minutes in the beat switches into a more upbeat R&B vibe. I personally love when songs do this, it feels like you get two songs in one and keeps you on your toes.
A final song that I would recommend from this new album is “Who knows.” Caesar has plenty of standout features on this album to explore, including one from Bon Iver, but his solo work is also very good in this album. The key changes and lyrics within this song are really special, and Caesar’s soft voice makes him a perfect candidate to sing romantic songs.
Overall, there wasn’t a single bad song on this album. Even coming from someone who seldom listens to Caesar, I would definitely give this album a listen, and then a re-listen. As winter creeps towards us, I think this album is so comforting and cozy to bring into the season. Whether you’re a fan or not, I encourage you to check this new album out.
