A Military Connection

Principal Johnny Bush talks to a member of the military at a back-to-school event on MacDill Air Force Base.

Student Led Organization Provides Support for New Students

For military students like Bradley DeThomas (’14), moving from school to school was a part of life — but it did not make the transition any easier; it drove DeThomas and his co-founder, Samantha Ishee (’15), to create a student-to-student (S2S) club devoted to helping military students with this transition.

“I think S2S will give military students a support group of other students who understand the difficulties of being the new kid at school,” DeThomas said. “I also see S2S as something that will help bring the military students together as a group.”

Before moving to Robinson last school year, DeThomas had been to four different high schools — none of which has an S2S club, making him eager to create the club. S2S is working with the MacDill Air Force Base School Liaison Officer to host events, such as bowling, and on-base activities, such as beach parties throughout the year that will help foster a sense of community of military and transitioning students feel welcome into the Robinson family.

If you are new to Robinson, are a student affiliated with the military or simply want more information on S2S, please email [email protected]

Isabel Hanewicz, RHStoday Editor-In-Chief
Isabel Hanewicz is a senior at Robinson High School and is the editor-in-chief of RHStoday. She was named the 2014 Emerging Young Journalist of the Year for the state of Florida. Walking without tripping is not one of her talents, so please do not give her any breakable objects. She is also known to slow down computers in the journalism room because she does not like to close tabs (32 tabs, to be exact). When she's not in the journalism room, she's probably out running for Robinson's cross country or track teams, where she is the captain. Follow her on Twitter @isabelhanewicz and @hanewiczphotos
