Robinson High School is ranked No. 26 on a list of Florida’s top 50 high schools of 2014. The rankings were based off research and data gathered by U.S. News & World Report. Schools were evaluated on student to teacher ratio, how seniors performed on their AP tests and in the subjects of math and reading on their FCATs.

Only one other Hillsborough County school made the list: Tampa Bay Technical High School at No. 47. Robinson was the only school in the county in the top 30.

Principal Johnny Bush found out about the rankings through a Facebook post that led to the list. He then did some research on the subject and decided to delay announcing the accomplishment until he fully understood the reasoning behind the ranking.

“I didn’t say a whole lot about it because even though we’re in the top 30, we would probably be in a lot better shape if our math was better than what it is,” said Bush.

Bush explained the Algebra 1 EOC scores are below level due to the fact that there are not a lot of Algebra 1 classes offered at Robinson. The majority of students, including IB and AP students, take Algebra 1 in eighth grade.

Depending on how the seniors do on their AP testing and how the FCAT scores are, Algebra 1 will be the main focus of administration next year. In order to keep scores rising, administration will try to ensure Algebra 1 students are attending summer programs, EOC Saturday school, ELP, and taking more frequent formative tests.

“Our Algebra 1 has to rise,” said Bush. “We’re rising in AP, number of AP exams given, number of AP exams passed. We’re rising in FCAT Reading.”

Robinson High is on the rise, due to the determination of faculty and the greatness within the students, according to Bush.

“Our goal is not only to be the No. 1 school in Hillsborough County but the No. 1 school in the nation. In order to do that we have to reach out to every population that’s involved within our school,” said Bush. “Let’s keep rising.”
