New to School: AP Music Theory

AnnaBeth Graves, Staff Writer

What: AP Music Theory, being offered at Robinson for the first time.

Who: AP Music Theory is being taught by Christopher Revett, the band instructor

When: Fourth Period

What is AP Music Theory?: According to the College Board’s course description, “The ultimate goal of an AP Music Theory course is to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. ” The curriculum of AP Music Theory is equivalent to an introductory music theory course in college, and students who receive a passing score may be able to get college credit. The class covers both aural (auditory) and non-aural aspects. “It’s going to be a very difficult class because of the material, but I’m very happy about [teaching] this class,” said Revett.

Students Say…  they aim to get a 5, the highest score, even though the material is harder than a typical music class.

Did You Know… As the class is in fourth period, IB students cannot technically take it, however, when staffers went into the AP Music Theory class, multiple IB  band students were sitting in. The IB students make an effort to attend the class during their regular lunch period to listen in on the instruction, just to broaden their knowledge of music.
