Robinson’s Troupe 2660 has returned victorious from theatre districts once again. After three months of preparing monologues, duets, solos and costume designs, their efforts paid off. With rankings from unranked, honorable mention, excellent and superior, Troupe 2660 won three excellents and two superiors across two categories; with excellents and superiors being the highest awards you can earn in a category, Troupe 2660 had an excellent showing in districts this year.
The main event centered around theatre performance, mainly duets and solos from a number of different Broadway shows. From a Shakespeare monologue to “Beetlejuice: The Musical,” the Troupe’s performances spanned all across the theatre landscape. Some were more recognizable, but the best part was the representation of lesser-known shows such as “Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812.”
Troupe 2660 also competed in costume design. With minimum constraints on what and how they design, students get free rein on the design they create. Students are able to pick five characters from a show and create unique costumes for each of them or pick one character and create 5 costume changes for said character.
Gerard Couture (’26) was the first student in three years to compete in the costume design category. While he competed last year in the stage category, winning two excellents, tackling the costume design category was nerve-wracking.
“I was really nervous, and I had very low expectations for myself as it was something entirely new and I was the only one from our school doing it,” Couture said.
Preparing for the design category was a different beast than the stage. Couture spent his time juggling his stage performances, as well as honing his designs for the judges with assistance from the new director and ASL teacher, Jesse Dorsey.
“It took a lot of preparation in really describing my concepts correctly and giving each choice I made a purpose to really gain a confidence and understanding of the category. I had a lot of help from [Jessie] Dorsey who had judged technical categories before,” Couture said.
Troupe 2660 has had a record semester. Their hard work preparing for districts whilst rehearsing their fall show, “As She Likes It,” has paid off by earning them a ticket to states next semester. The future of Robinson theatre under the tutelage of the new director is looking bright. After the success of their original show “As She Likes It,” be sure to continue to support Troupe 2660 on their journey to states.
