Recently, singer-songwriter Chappell Roan has been rising to fame after having multiple hits such as “Casual” and “Good Luck, Babe!” Her music is great; she’s bringing back 80’s style classic pop with her own twist. As much her music is loved, there has definitely been some disagreement with her social media presence.
The controversy started when Roan posted a video telling people that if they see her in public, they should not ask for a picture or say hi. She explained this in a recent video from her TikTok page.
“If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from your car window?” she asks.
This confused me, because she is not a “random woman” she is a celebrity who makes her money and builds her career from her fans. To not be thankful for your fans, or even take a picture if someone asks politely, is just plain rude. Without people supporting her music and following her socials, she would just be a random woman, but without fans she would have to work a regular job. According to a video she posted on TikTok, she wants to have this job without any of the negatives.
“I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job in the career field I’ve chosen, that does not make it okay,” Roan said.
This is true that some fan behavior is abnormal, but obviously your #1 listener of the year and biggest supporter will be disappointed if you seem annoyed to meet them. She has made statements like “I am your favorite artist’s favorite artist. I am your dream girl’s dream girl,” yet she still can’t even be appreciative of the people that brought her to fame? Being excited to meet your idols is normal, and Roan should either accept that or find another career choice.
Another recent video Roan made was about this year’s upcoming election. She claims that there are problems on both sides, therefore she is endorsing neither side.
“I can’t put my entire name and entire project behind one,” Roan claims.
I understand that everyone has frustrations with the political state of our country, but what are the odds that a candidate would come along with her exact viewpoints? Even if she finds someone running who perfectly aligns with her views, how likely will it be perfect for someone else? As a celebrity, if you make official statements about your views, it can make real changes in the elections and saying you don’t like either side and to pick whoever you think is more right is just naive.
Overall, I know Roan is new to stardom, but she needs to understand what comes along with the job and the influence she has over the public.
