As Hurricane Idalia approached the Tampa Bay area, all schools in Hillsborough County were closed on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30.
Tampa and the majority of Florida’s west coast began evacuations and preparations for a Category Three hurricane as it made landfall on Tuesday night. With life-threatening storm surges and over 125 mph winds, shutters were being pulled down and families were huddling in.
Flooding rapidly began as the “dirty side” of Idalia wiped through the area. Streets became invisible to the eye and Tampa residents suffered the effects of this hefty hurricane. Damages are seen throughout the South of Gandy (SOG), Bayshore and Davis Island. Many individuals are currently stuck in their homes with water being an uninvited guest for the next couple of days.
The district is deciding now if school will resume Thursday, Aug. 31 and will be sending an email out to all parents later this afternoon with the safest and best decision for students and parents.
