The Lady Knights flag football team started their season with 24 players,  five coaches, and one goal- win the state championship. Tonight, they did just that.

“There aren’t words to describe it,” said head coach Joshua Saunders. “I am just so happy for the girls. No one works harder than them at what they do. They really deserve it.”

Saunders and his team finished their season in dynamic fashion. They won the state finals game vs. Seminole Ridge Community High School by a score of 7-6, completing their undefeated season. They scored a total of 662 points throughout the season and only allowed a total of 18 points.

In the final game of the season, Amanda Chromiak (’15) scored the only touchdown by the Knights with 30 seconds left in the first half. Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter.

“I was thinking dear God, don’t let me drop this,” said Chromiak.

Seminole Ridge scored with five minutes left in the third quarter, but their extra point was no good.

“They knew that that point could make all the difference in the world, and it did,” said Saunders.

As two minutes read on the final game clock, captain Caroline King (’14) went down with what appeared to be an injury.

“I got up because we hadn’t won 19 yet,” said King.

The final quarter was scoreless, meaning the Knights had won the first flag football state championship in school history.

This was not the first time the Knights were in the state series; they were eliminated the past two seasons in state quarter final games. Seminole Ridge had won the state championship the past two seasons.

“I cried when they placed the medal around my neck,” said captain Kylee Gorngpratum (’14). “This was four years of hard work.”
