Volleyball: Robinson Clinches Berth in Regional Finals
November 2, 2015
Robinson’s road to a third straight regional championship extended on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Knights (21-8) defeated Sebring (20-6) in four sets by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 26-28 and 25-19.
“I think our experience [set us apart],” said Robinson head coach Christen Garcia. “Having been at this part of the playoffs before, their emotions aren’t running too high or too low.”
The contributions came from all around the court for the Lady Knights, who were back to their regular lineup with Rebecca Hill (’16) returning and playing through an ankle injury. Hill totaled a career-high 43 assists.
“I can’t say enough about that kid,” said Garcia. “She nursed [the injury] all week and she was determined to play, so that just shows the type of kid she is and how much she means to this team.”
Catia Sleet (’16) picked up 21 kills and 14 digs, with McKenna Tyson (’17) adding 12 kills. Emily Draper tallied 14 digs and four aces while Kristin Werdine (’19) finished with eight kills and 15 digs.
After the Lady Knights started strong with back-to-back wins in the first two sets, the Blue Streaks came fighting back with a 28-26 victory that saw Robinson miss on two match points.
“I give a lot of credit to them,” she said. “They scrapped. When you have a team that plays defense like that, it hurts us in terms of momentum and the mental side of the game.”
The Lady Knights were able to put Sebring away in the fourth set, fending off one final run on their way to a 25-19 win.
Robinson will look to capture their third straight regional title on Tuesday night when they travel to take on Lely (21-6) in a rematch of the 2013 and 2014 regional finals.
