In a heartbreaking loss to end the Lady Knights’ 15 game win streak and history-making season, Robinson fell to Lakewood 50-38 this Friday. Feb. 17, in the FHSAA 6A Regional Finals.

“After the game, we agreed as a team that we are proud of our record breaking season but not satisfied,” head coach Stephanie Sweeney said. “We couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively tonight and turn overs killed us.”

Both teams battled with tight play on both sides of the ball and the first quarter ended with a 9-4 Robinson lead. But at the start of the second quarter, tight press by the Spartans sparked consecutive turnovers from the Lady Knights. Giving up six points in less than a minute, the Lady Knights quickly lost the lead and were unable to gain it back.

“We came out really strong at the start and played with a lot of intensity,” captain Charlotte Tuohy (’17) said. “The issue was that we could not keep our momentum going.”

Robinson’s Kaliah Henderson (’19) led the game in scoring with 23 points, followed by Lakewood’s Toi Smith (’18) with 16 points. Free throws pushed the Spartans over the edge, as they made nine out of 13 and the Lady Knights only made four out of eight.

The Lady Knights will lose two seniors this season, captains Charlotte Tuohy and Holland Baker.

“When I started my freshman year, we were horrible. We won one game. I have really loved watching the program develop,” Tuohy said. “I have loved being an influential part if this game and this team which has meant so much to me.”

Lakewood will face Ponte Vedra in the state semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Lakeland Center (701 W Lime St, Lakeland, FL 33815).
