On the 14th, Robinson Girls soccer team took on the Gaither Cowboys in the knight’s fourth game of the season. So far, Robinson has been enjoying a successful season, with the girls entering the match with an impressive 3-0 record, scoring 22 goals in three matches, while only conceding two. This stood in stark comparison to the Gaither Cowboys, who entered the game 0-3. Despite this apparent strength discrepancy, Gaither was determined to put up a fight.
Robinson struck first, with a beautiful shot from Jasmyn Mitchner (’26), a first-time strike to the top left corner, finessing its way past the Gaither goalkeeper for the first score, and showing off Robinson’s offensive ability.
As the game continued, great defensive work by Robinson as well as heroic saves by keeper Delilah Burns (’27) playing through an injured wrist were able to stave off the relentless Gaither attack and help forward the ball to the offense. However, eventually Gaither’s relentless attack would culminate in a simple tap in as the Cowboys descended on the Robinson box, tying the game 1-1.
This wouldn’t last long however, as Jayla Pettiford (’26) delivered an absolute rocket, shooting past the Gaither goalkeeper to put the knights up 2-1.
Up until this point, Robinson has done a great job defending. However, as the match progressed, it became sloppier and sloppier, with Burns eventually having to defend a total eleven shots on goal. This deterioration of defense was especially evident when a foul was committed in the knight’s box, leading to a Gaither penalty kick, tying the game once again.
Robinson were able to retaliate, with Mitchner sneaking the ball past the opposition’s keeper, refusing to allow Gaither to win, and scoring her second, but certainly not last of the high-scoring game.
The knights would ride this 3-2 lead into half time, but despite their one goal advantage over the Cowboys, they weren’t yet satisfied. The game would conclude 6-4 in favor of Robinson, serving as an impressive win for girls’ soccer. In the match, Jasmyn Mitchner would go on to score an impressive three goals, concluding her hat-trick, while both Sadie Proveaux (’27) and Larissa Levy (’25) joining the scorecard in the later 40 minutes.
“We knew that Gaither was a pretty good team and the fact that it is a rivalry game is what drove me,” Mitchner said, who scored thrice against Gaither. “Most of our line up consists [of] underclassmen we have asked to step up.”
This game helped prove that despite the large amount of new and unexperienced players, Robinson is still a force to be reckoned with in the district, with many of the new players rising to the occasion, as mentioned by Mitchner. Currently, the Knights are averaging seven goals a game, while conceding, on average, only 1.5 goals per game. This match helped demonstrate the impressive abilities of several Robinson players, including Mitchner who had a total of four goal contributions, and goalkeeper Burns who had eight saves despite her injured wrist.
“I am really impressed by our performance so far, and it’s only going to get better throughout the season,” Burns said. “I know that this year [the] team has what it takes to go past districts.
Robinson still has a long way to go this season, but the team has been playing fantastic so far, and expectations are high regarding the girl’s post-season success as they continue to battle their way through the remainder of their regular season games.
