Video: English teachers share the importance of teaching Black literature

Celebrating Black historical figures has been a tradition for Robinson’s annual door decorating contest during Black History Month. The faces of scientists, authors and leaders cover the school, along with facts and quotes.
But for many English teachers, the appreciation goes beyond the month of February, past the door and into the classroom. To widen students’ horizons, many teachers have strayed away from the majority-white American classics and opted to teach works by Black authors.
