As the captain of the Robinson High varsity basketball team, Zyon Floyd has taken on a role that extends far beyond the court. The senior point guard is not just focused on scoring points; he is dedicated to fostering a strong team culture and helping his teammates grow, both as players and as individuals.
“Leadership is something I take a lot of pride in,” Floyd (’26) said. “I want to lead the team and put my teammates in the best positions to succeed. I see my role as helping them improve not only during basketball but also outside of it.”
His commitment to his team’s success is evident in his approach to leadership, where he emphasizes trust and support.
This season, Floyd is aware that the team is still developing chemistry, particularly since many players are new to the varsity level.
“Right now, I would say the chemistry is not where it needs to be, but we have the preseason to get on the same page,” he said. “By the time the season comes, I think it will look beautiful.”
His optimism reflects a deep belief in the potential of his teammates.
Floyd’s passion for basketball stems from a young age, influenced heavily by his father, who has been a constant figure in his life.
“My dad has been along my side through my whole basketball career,” he said. “He’s always pushed me to be great. If I notice something’s off, I look at him, and he tells me exactly what’s wrong.”
This bond has shaped Floyd into the player and leader he is today.
Teammates also recognize his impact on the team’s dynamics. Tanner Corral, a junior and shooting guard, describes the team culture as a family.
“Zyon is a great leader,” Tanner said. “Before games, he gets us ready and gives us encouraging words. He knows how to distribute the ball and create more possessions for us.”
This ability to uplift his teammates and maximize their strengths is crucial for the team’s success.
James Lass, another senior and small forward, echoes Tanner’s sentiments.
“Zyon is not afraid to call people out. He takes accountability when he messes up, which makes us respect him even more,” James stated. “He helps me to realize that I don’t have to do everything because I trust him to control the game.” This mutual trust is essential for any successful team.
Derrick Lester, a junior who plays multiple positions, highlighted Zyon’s energy and ability to bring the team together.
“Zyon helps everyone with their roles,” Derrick said. “Yesterday, when we were slacking, he turned us up, and we ended up getting the win.”
His infectious energy and leadership on and off the court create a positive environment for the entire team.
As Floyd looks toward the future, his dreams extend beyond high school basketball. “If the opportunity presents itself for me to play college basketball, I will gladly take it,” he said. “But if it doesn’t happen, I’ll go to college for academics and probably do something involving sports.” With aspirations to attend LSU, Zyon is ready to embrace whatever comes next.
In a season filled with potential, Zyon Floyd stands as a pedestal of leadership for the Robinson varsity basketball team. His dedication to his teammates and his passion for the game are sure to inspire those around him as they strive for a successful season ahead.
