I joined the staff my sophomore year not knowing what I was getting into and not knowing if I would like it. I was lucky enough to make many memories, friends and was able to find a hobby I didn’t know I had.
I wasn’t really big on writing stories and never really finished them if I ever started one, but that didn’t stop me from liking journalism though, with Ms. Oben’s help, I found out that I’m pretty good at taking sports pictures. Let’s just say the first couple of games I went to weren’t the greatest pictures, but I stuck to it and now that’s all I do.
I will say taking journalism is worth it. I met so many amazing people by taking this class and was able to become closer to the school. Due to being a multi-sport athlete, in the spring, I wasn’t able to go to the biggest and my favorite field trip, FSPA States, but I was able to attend Camp Orlando over the summer. Going to Camp Orlando was one of my favorite memories of being on staff. Hanging out and staying in a hotel with some of my friends for a week and learning more about journalism over the summer was something that I never thought I would do or even wanted in that I would “waste” a week of summer at “Nerd Camp.”
That week wasn’t wasted; I was able to share a hotel room with some of my closest friends and even made new friends from schools all around Florida. My favorite parts were staying up until two in the morning working on the poster and listening to Yesenia complain about how much homework Brit Taylor gave her while we were having fun and hanging out.
I don’t know if this memory is classified as a favorite, but I will never forget when I wrote a story for the first time with over 600 words just for it to be all deleted due to the bad hotel Wi-Fi. Being part of Robinson Journalism is a great opportunity and has so many benefits. I recommend you join the family.
