For many upperclassmen, college applications may seem overwhelming. With so much information, options and locations, choosing where you want to spend your next four years of education seems almost impossible. Thankfully, Robinson has multiple opportunities to make your application process easier. Throughout fall, a limited number of colleges are visiting Robinson to provide more information about their schools and why you should go, a helpful experience for anyone exploring options after high school.
The college visits are immensely opportunities, yet not everyone is completely satisfied.
“I thought it was very informative and helpful, but I don’t think it will help me with college applications,” Jacob Sackenheim (’27) said. “It kinda just went over what I knew and there wasn’t that much on the actual school.”
The speakers cover a lot of rudimentary information, which, although helpful, is nothing new to students who have done research on the schools. This isn’t to say the information can’t be helpful, but to many it’s just a supplemental aspect to the main benefit of the visits: the opportunity to ask questions. If students have any questions or uncertainties, they have the chance to clarify them with the speaker, helping make sure they know everything they want to know about the school.
Another comment students had about the visits is that they simply can’t get enough. Only a handful of colleges send representatives, leaving many people wanting more.
“I did enjoy the college visit, but I wish more schools would visit Robinson,” Bryce Woody (’27) said. “Especially out of state schools, so we could get a better understanding of different colleges and what makes each of them unique.”
The only out of state schools that send representatives are John Hopkins, Vanderbilt, University of Pennsylvania and Princeton, some of the most selective (and expensive) universities that simply aren’t viable options for many students. This means that many students don’t get any information on colleges outside of Florida, pressuring them to stay in state despite the immense opportunities in other parts of the country.
Still, the vast majority of students at Robinson are applying to at least one school in Florida, meaning that visits from more local schools are still extremely helpful.
Choosing a college is stressful, but Robinson is here to help. By bringing in speakers from colleges, RHS is helping prepare upperclassmen for their life beyond high school.
