As we know Robinson high school does not have an official dance team like most of the surrounding Hillsborough County do. For example, Plant high school has their Dancero’s dance team which have gone to numerous competitions, such as UDA, over the summer as well as performing at a Bucs game half time show which they do yearly. They also still participate in home and away halftime football games for their school; pep rallies and even have their own special “Danceros showcase” that they put on every year.
Robinson does however have the Starlets which participate in color guard and perform at football games as well as pep rallies and the Kultural Dance Club (KDC) which only performs at pep rallies. Robinson’s Starlets used to be a dedicated dance team back in the ’70s, but sometime in the late ’90s the Starlets merged with color guard. I think we need to bring back the idea of having two teams again: one dance team and one-color guard.
I myself am a dancer outside of school and I think having an official dance team here at Robinson, like Plant’s Dancero’s, could provide another opportunity for dancers who do not want to participate in Starlets or the KDC dance club. As much as Starlets and KDC do work very hard on their routines, I feel like it is a different style of dance than what most high school dance teams do such as jazz, kick and pom routines.
Doing a varsity sport during high school for your school opens up so many more opportunities for people especially when it comes time to apply to colleges. Plants Dancero’s have performed at halftime during Bucs games and have had many other cool opportunities.
Most out of school dancers here at Robinson are not familiar with starlets and KDC’s styles of dance and we think that with an official and focused dance team, Robinson can become a dance powerhouse.
