On Saturday, October 17, Robinson, Plant and Lakewood Ranch came together for Robinson volleyball’s fourth annual Dig Pink event, which raises money for breast cancer research.

The day featured three games, but it was the fundraising that made the event special. The Lady Knights sold pink wristbands leading up to Saturday, which, paired with raffle items and baked goods in the gym lobby, were part of the team’s goal to raise $1,500 for breast cancer research.

“The game of life is really tough,” said Robinson head coach Christen Garcia. “People are fighting battles every day and if we can support that and fund it, then we’re happy to be a part of that.”

Prior to the matchup between Robinson and Plant, players from both teams each honored someone they know who has battled cancer, presenting them or their loved ones with pink flowers.

“I was really impressed and shocked how every single girl from Plant and Robinson knows someone, or their family knows someone, that has been affected by cancer,” Garcia said. “It really put things in perspective.”

Although the final scores didn’t swing in the Lady Knights’ favor, volleyball paled in comparison to the amount of support shown for those who have fought or are currently fighting a battle with cancer.

Robinson will next host Spoto on Wednesday night in the district semifinals.
