Girls tennis secures back-to-back district championships

This past Monday, April 10, the girls tennis team won the 2A district competition for the second year in a row, beating Academy of the Holy Names with a score of 19-14. Elliot Peterson (’19) placed first in singles, and Peterson and Ashley Osiason (’18) won doubles.

“It was great,” Osiason said. “Most people won their matches and we swept Academy, our main rival.”

Osiason has played tennis since her freshman year, and is second seed on the team.

Last year, the team made it to the first round of states. This year, however, expectations are higher.

“We want to make it to the second round of states,” Osiason explained. “We didn’t lose many seniors, so we should be a better team than we were last year.”

With this win, the first seed singles and doubles players have secured a spot in the state competition. If the team wins the regional championship next week, the entire team will advance to states.

Robinson will host the first round of the regional competition next Tuesday, April 18. The competition will be held at 3 p.m. at the South Tampa YMCA (4411 South Himes Ave, Tampa, FL, 33611).
