The Robinson boys’ basketball team hosted it’s first home game of the season on Friday, Dec 6, playing against the Blake Yellow Jackets. The game slipped away from the Knights in the second quarter, and ultimately ended 85-67 in Blake’s favor.

For the senior players, this would be their last home opener with the team, which brought a lot of emotion to the game.

“[It] felt great, just like home.” guard Joshua Hall-Gomez (’20) said. “[I’m] sad this is the last home [opener] ever.”

The game started with Robinson guard Dexter Caldwell (’20) taking the tip-off and scoring a layup in the first six seconds of the game. The first quarter kept up that quick pace, with the score at the end of the first quarter sitting at 18-17 in Blake’s favor.

Then came the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets went on to outscore the Knights 22-7 in the second quarter, giving them a 40-24 lead going into halftime.

“We just kinda struggled to score and they put it up,” Head Coach Steve Smith said. “We could just never recover.”

The second half was quite even, with Robinson only being outscored 45-43, but the deficit that was created in the second quarter proved to be too big of an obstacle for the Knights to overcome.

Senior guard Joe Strickland (’20) had over 15 points on the night, as well as a block. But that was not enough for the guard.

“It don’t really matter how I played,” Strickland said. “At the end of the day we’re 0-3 and that’s not where we want to be.”

Looking forward, the team will look to make adjustments from their play against Blake.

“We just gotta play harder, we gotta play better defense, we gotta knock down shots,” Strickland said. “That’s how you win a basketball game, you gotta knock down shots and we just didn’t score.”

The Knights next game is a home game against the Middleton Tigers on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
