Robinson Knights Push Through First Playoff and Last Game

Football team makes it through last game with team still intact

After a 25-24 regular season win over Tama Catholic, the Knights meet the Crusaders for a rematch for the FSHAA District 2-M Regional Quarterfinal game. This time, the score wasn’t in our favor with the team losing 35-7.

The team had demonstrated a level of fierce play when on the field, with their 7-2 record this season leading up to playoffs, besting their 2022-23 6-5 season.

With a build-up of a fantastic season, a lot was riding on the Robinson vs. Tampa Catholic on the 10th of November. A win moved them closer to the championships and a loss ended their best season in a decade.

The Robinson Knights had a vigorous first half. The Crusaders got a first touchdown early on, but the Knights retaliated with a touchdown of their own. The subsequent first half was a tie of 7-7 as both teams fought back and forth to make any major push forward. The Knights made it to the red zone a couple times but couldn’t capitalize with a score. The Crusaders also blocked a field goal in the half.

However, the Knights had completely lost their edge by the 3rd quarter. The Crusaders cemented their success early on, as they scored a touchdown in the first few minutes into the second half of the game.

“It was not our best performance, probably the worst of ours this year. We just couldn’t finish any of our drives. In the second half, they scored again, and it just went downhill from there,” said Xander Logan, a wide receiver for the team. “In a game, we need all 11 guys on the field. When one guy gives up, it falls apart.”

The Crusaders continued scoring points, ending the game with 35-7 final score.

“It started out decent in the first half, 7-7.” said EJ Archield (’25), quarterback of the football team. “But we came out in the second half, we just couldn’t finish; we had too many self-inflicted penalties. There were many things I could’ve done differently.”

About the Contributors
Jordan De La Cruz
Jordan De La Cruz, Staff Writer
Jordan De La Cruz is a junior at Robinson and a staff writer for Knight Writers. This is his first year on the staff. A true artist, De La Cruz partakes in many artistic hobbies including playing drums, guitar and even painting. "Anything creative I love to take part in," De La Cruz said. With an affinity for editing videos and having already written a few full-length stories, De La Cruz's passions for newspaper extend beyond the class. He felt joining newspaper would benefit his interests and wanted to expand his already formidable writing abilities. "As a writer I felt like this would be a super fun way to expand my influences with writing but also with the video editing," De La Cruz said. "I already have a good past in video editing that I think doing more of it would be great." While De La Cruz enjoys the opportunity to express his writing abilities, video creation is another thing that drew De La Cruz to newspaper. He looks forward to making content for the ongoing "Man on the street" videos under the Knight Mic series. De La Cruz looks forward to being able to build on the foundation left by previous classes and hopes to expand the coverage of Knight Mic videos beyond pep rallies and RHS sporting events. "I'm excited to be a host, be able to put my charisma on the screen," De La Cruz said. "Just being able to make videos with two friends of mine, I'm really excited." Never staying in one school for long, De La Cruz looks forward to finishing his final years at Robinson and leaving his mark on the school as a Knight Writer. "I used to move every year, but this is the only time I'm going to be able to finish the next three years at the same high school," De La Cruz said. "I'm super hopeful ... [that] I'll be able to have some sort of mark on the school." (Profile by Yesenia Rosario)
Keirra McGoldrick
Keirra McGoldrick, Opinion Editor
Keirra McGoldrick is senior at Robinson and the Opinion Editor of Knight Writers. This is her third year on staff and her second year as an editor. McGoldrick, as an editor, must provide a sense of direction and help for those coming into newspaper who may not quite know what they need to be doing. She must also make sure that all stories written by staff writers are up to par with that of the standard for the newspaper. “I edit all the opinion stories and make spreadsheets for opinion writers," McGoldrick said. McGoldrick may like writing in journalism, though nothing trumps her love of photography. She lists photography as one of her favorite hobbies and pass times outside of journalism. “I like photography," McGoldrick said. "I take pictures of anything I find interesting." Though McGoldrick has to keep up a balance of her academics and the needs of newspaper, she hopes to have enough time to join the photography club.  She wishes to do this in order to interact and convey her love of photography with other like-minded students at Robinson. Being the academic achiever that she is, McGoldrick keeps up with all of her classes. The two of these classes that she holds closest to her heart are journalism and history. However, she probably favors journalism a little more because it has her favorite teacher, Ms. Webster, who leads her to improve herself in all manner of things, especially photography. Outside of journalism, one of McGoldrick’s pastimes is to listen to music. As we know everyone needs a little bit of music to pull them through a slow school day, or just a slow day in general. “I like R&B and pop," McGoldrick said. “Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, etc." High school isn't all McGoldrick has mapped out to do. Seeing as she is an academic achiever, McGoldrick already has plans for her future. She plans to keep her academic streak going through college. “I plan on going to university and majoring in criminal psychology and then after I graduate from normal college, I’m going to go get a PhD,” McGoldrick said. Jennie Gutman
Jennie Gutman, Staff Writer
Jennie Gutman is a junior at Robinson and a staff writer for Knight Writers. This is her first year on staff. The main reason why Gutman decided to be part of the staff is to become an advanced writer, allowing her to excel in her classes. As a basketball player, Gutman has a deep passion for sports writing and looks forward to covering all the RHS sports. A baller at heart, Gutman aspires to pursue her passion for basketball after high school. "My main goal in basketball is to get into D1, and if not D1 then I would try to get into D2 and then play overseas," Gutman said as she's currently trying to score 1,000 points and was titled the MVP 2 times at Robinson. Other than Basketball, Gutman finds joy in shopping, hanging out with friends, and most importantly, she focuses on exercising at least once per day to try and improve her game. With a wide-open future, Gutman hopes to either help people as a Physical Therapist or pursue her interest in stocks by becoming a Businesswoman. "In the near future, I just want to help people as much as I can," Gutman said. (Profile by Brianna Yasis)
Sophie Le
Sophie Le, Staff Writer
Sophie Le is a sophomore at Robinson, and a Staff Writer for Knight Writers. This is her first year on staff. Le joined journalism because she wanted to gain more writing experience. "I wanted to practice writing more, and I feel like this is a great opportunity to practice every week and write stories about things I like,” she said. Her goals for this year include many things involving social media and photography. "I wanted to practice writing and explore other areas of journalism." Le said. When not in class, Le is the Vice President of Congre, Social Media Manager of Knightmare and the secretary of Book Club. She chose these clubs because she wanted to be an active part of the school through the things she enjoys. "I chose French when I went to IB, book club because I love to read, I love seeing different genres and different books, and then Knightmare because I love school spirit and going to football games,” she said. Outside of school, Le's favorite extracurriculars are playing tennis, either on Robinson's varsity girl's team or on her club team, helping sew at her grandmother's alteration shop, along with shopping and thrifting. These help her calm down when stressed with her busy schedule, she explains how she enjoys making outfits. "I love shopping and thrifting, because it's my favorite hobby. It's so fun, I love putting together outfits." Le said. Le says she would like to continue in journalism throughout high school, with hopes of writing about current fashion. "I would love to write about fashion; I think definitely in the future that could be an interest." Le said. (Profile by Ryan Rolle)
