All the “Twilight” fans such as myself have been waiting for the revival of the vampire genre in film and finally, when a movie featuring a gothic romance vampire couple comes out, it’s disappointing. “The Invitation” is a new supernatural horror film directed by Jessica M. Thompson released on Friday, Aug. 26.

If I’m being honest I didn’t even know about this movie until about two weeks ago when I came across the trailer in the depths of a midnight youtube binge. Then when I asked my friends if they had heard of it and wanted to come to watch it with me, they all responded with, ‘I’ve never even heard of that movie.’ So to start this off, let me just say that the advertisement for this movie was absolutely terrible.

No buzz aside, if you watched the trailer you would know that this movie is about a girl named Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), that is reunited with her long-lost family after the death of her mother. Evie’s second cousin Oliver (Hugh Skinner), then invites her to England to attend a wedding and it is not long before she realizes that this “family” is actually a vampire cult that likes to eat the help and is actually trying to force her to marry Oliver’s best friend, Walter (Thomas Doherty).

My main complaint about the movie was how slow-paced it was. There’s not much going on in the first hour or so, but within the last 20 minutes, they tried to throw in the whole plot making it very overwhelming and hasty.

The most enjoyable part of this film was Emmanuel’s portrayal of the main character Evie. She does an amazing job at making the character very charming and likable. Throughout the movie, you really feel for the character and are rooting for her to find the happiness she deserves. She makes all of the boring parts somewhat bearable.

Now, while writing this, I was very careful not to include any spoilers but that seems very hard when the film’s entire plot is revealed in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer they released two months ago. It makes watching it anticlimactic and predictable. What you see is truly what you get.

As I was watching this movie, I truly forgot that it was supposed to be a horror film. They tried adding all these little jump scares and it really wasn’t working, it just came off more annoying than anything.

At the absolute peak of the film is the infamous dinner scene which is again, shown in the trailer so there is absolutely no suspense. Evie is now aware that she is surrounded by vampires and is obviously terrified and what do they decide to do now…. nothing we haven’t seen before in other vampire films and done even better. The rest of the movie just comes off as cliche.

This movie was basically a vampire romance wanna-be horror film. It just feels like the main focus was the romantic element rather than the horror/mystery that it claims to be. If you’re a hardcore horror movie fan, then this might not be the movie for you. The jump scares are mid and the gore is very minimal due to the fact that this is a PG-13 movie. It’s just not very good and if anything, don’t watch this movie for the plot but watch it for the hot vampires.
