MidKnight Snack: Mexican Bueñuelos
These Mexican Bueñuelos will make your night ‘bueno.’

The first time I ever tried a Bueñuelo was because my mom wanted something sweet. Instead of buying something store-bought, she decided to show us how to make food that is from our culture.
This treat is originally from Spain. It has become part of Latin culture as a common street food, usually eaten around Christmas time with a cup of hot cocoa. There are many different ways to make this treat. They are a kind of donut fritter; many countries have their own version in Europe, Asia, and especially in South America.
Ingredients:
- mini tortillas (corn or flour)
- vegetable oil
- cinnamon
- desired amount of sugar
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream ( for whipped cream)
- 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
Directions:
- First, take out a medium-sized skillet and fill it with vegetable oil. Turn the heat on.
- Mix two parts of sugar and equal parts of cinnamon together. Set aside.
- Take out a plate and place three pieces of paper towel, to soak up the grease.
- Place tortilla in oil and fry on both sides until crispy.
- Once done frying, place the chip on the plate and wait a few seconds for the excess grease to be soaked up.
- Sprinkle both sides of the chip with cinnamon sugar.
- Add whipped cream (optional)
- Put 1 cup heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and three drops of vanilla extract in a medium/large bowl.
- Mix together with an electric mixer until you reach a stiff peak.
- Sprinkle whipped cream with cinnamon.
If you want a softer bueñuelo, then use flour tortillas. For a crispier bueñuelo, use corn tortillas.
These cinnamon and sugar bueñuelos are so delicious. They take almost no effort to make. Instead of making the dough and making a bigger mess, I just use tortillas. While this dessert isn’t usually served with whip cream, it definitely makes it just a bit sweeter. This easy sweet treat is the perfect dessert to end your night with.
