The Games of Thrones (GOT) universe is quite gruesome and very serious; it usually focuses on the nobles, the royal family and the action they have going on. However, this time it will focus on the journey of a knight trying to bring glory to his name: Ser Duncan the Tall. In the end, he will have four pages for his deeds in the Book of Brothers, also known as White Book. The White Book records the deeds of every knight who has ever served in the Kings guard. If you have watched Game of Thrones, you can see Ser Brienne of Tarth writing in it.
As you may know, when you press play you will be hit with the iconic intro that all fans love and remember. The show starts with Ser Duncan having to bury the Ser Arlan of Penny tree who raised and trained him. Duncan promising him to bring glory, even though he doesn’t know what type of knight he wants to be yet. Then we are met with a young boy whose name appears to be Egg, who wants to be Duncans Squire even though he is quite small and scrawny. A knight in the seven kingdom shows a more wholesome side to the GOT universe with a bit of its regular violence and brutal scenes. It definitely feels different from The House of the Dragon, which feels like you’re walking on eggshells while watching, although it’s still an amazing watch.
As the first episode continues, Ser Duncan and Egg make their way toward Ashford meadow, where the upcoming tourney promises opportunity and danger at the same time. Duncan still struggles with self doubt while trying to uphold the ideals Ser Arlan taught him.
The episode ends with Ser Duncan standing on the edge of the tourney grounds, watching knights, banners and nobles flood in from across the realm. The scale of it all makes his goal feel impossibly large yet he continues to believe in himself. With Egg and Ser Arlan teachings weighing on him, Ser Duncan steps forward ready to face whatever come his way. The final moments linger in the sense that this journey that he will take will be shaped by honor, choices and the cost of being a true knight.
