Getting through the exam season is rough, but on the other side awaits two months of relaxing summer. Going to the theater, watching movies and eating popcorn with friends is a great way to pass the time, especially with how many movies are coming out this summer.
“Spiderman: Brand New Day”
The long-awaited next edition to the Spider-Verse is coming out July 31. It takes place after the events of “No Way Home,” where Dr. strange has erased everyone’ memory of spiderman along with any physically record of him. This new movie is essentially a follow up to these events and how Spiderman is balancing his life between saving people and college classes with little social support. Even though some of the newer Marvel movies have been subpar, all of the Spider-Man movies have done pretty well, so I do have some high hopes for this movie.
“Six the Musical Live!”
“Six the Musical” is coming to theaters on Aug. 14. This is particularly exciting because it hasn’t been on any streaming platforms, unlike other musicals such as Hamilton and Heathers. It features the original West End cast and was filmed at the Vaudeville Theatre in London. Six has won 35 international awards, including two Tony awards and a Grammy nomination. Even though it does come out the same week that school starts next year, it would definitely be a fun get together for friends to celebrate surviving the first week.
“Ice Cream Man”
“Ice Cream Man” will be released on Aug 7. It is a horror movie that follows a perfect town where an ice cream vendor sells ice cream to kids, and from there, the kids become very murderous. The trailer juxtaposes these dark themes with very bright and vivid colors, almost as if the color palette is straight from a children’s movie. It creates a very eerie feeling, especially when combined with the creepy smile of the ice cream. This would be perfect for a scary movie night, when binge-watching horror films on end.
“The Odyssey” (2026)
“The Odyssey” is being released on July 7. The movie is a live-action adaptation that follows the basic premise of the epic poem, where Odysseus faces monsters on the ten-year voyage back home to Ithaca and his wife Penelope. The scenes in the trailer have a very mysterious and ominous tone, and the CGI used appears to be fairly captivating. The movie features many famous actors such as Tom Holland, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. With the budget of 250 million dollars, I have high hopes that this adaptation will be phenomenal.
There are so many options for new movies to watch this summer. Even if none of the movies here sounded particularly interesting to you, a quick search of what movies are coming out can lead you to dozens of movies soon to be in theaters. With the massive amount of free time during the summer, it’s the perfect time to kick back and relax, from the academic stress, which movies are perfect for.
