The varsity volleyball team closed out their season with a 6-15 record this year. They demonstrated growth, teamwork and resilience, and although the season didn’t go as well as the team may have hoped, the Knights learned a lot.
After winning their first game, the season was looking bright- but the success wouldn’t last. The team went on to lose the next thirteen games, but that just pushed them to work harder for the next matches. Towards the end of the season, much more improvement was showing as they went on to win five games.
“Our record wasn’t as good as we hoped it would be, but overall I think our season went really well,” Evelyn Donovan (’27) said. “The whole team had a great connection, and I love playing with all the girls. It was a lot of fun.”
Although the team was relatively young (having only three seniors) the players said that they saw improvement as the season moved along. They grew closer as a team this year, which made them work better on the court as a group. Because the team has so many underclassmen, at first they were unsure how well they would mesh.
“We were all kind of new to each other, and learning each other’s habits and tendencies,” Kaelyn Klaiber (’27), one of the captains, said. “But we definitely grew closer and stronger toward the end of the season, and started playing a lot better together.”
This connection became one of the defining parts of the team’s season. The team’s progress showed in the second half of the season, as sets became easier when their confidence finally clicked.
The team’s goal was to make it to states, and even though they weren’t able to this year, they still went far in the circuit. This season, the Lady Knights made it all the way to regionals for the second year in a row, their hard work paying off.
“We made it to regionals last year, but this season we played a tougher schedule. And it definitely helped us be a little bit more prepared for regionals,” Klaiber (’27) said.
This year, Robinson brought in a new girl’s volleyball coach, Coach Taylor, and she stepped in and quickly made an impact. Taylor helped strengthen the team’s consistency and fundamentals. The team said that his coaching style pushed them to work hard while keeping practices focused and fun.
“Coach Taylor is a very solid coach. He gives a lot of great feedback, and he did a lot for the program this year,” Klaiber (’27) said.
Even though it was his first season leading the program, Taylor brought the team new structure. His understanding of the game gave the girls a leg up, and they began to get better as the season went on.
Though the team faced many challenges this year, the team is feeling optimistic about next season. They are expected to have strong returners as well as new players, and they’re already looking forward to next year and what they will achieve.
