Twice a year, members of Robinson’s Mu Alpha Theta Club attend a Math Bowl competition in which many schools compete, putting their math knowledge to the test. Teams may compete in several different categories, such as Geometry and Pre-Calculus. This year, on March 18, Robinson’s Pre-Calculus team finished in second place overall. In addition, Kyle Johnson (’17) came in 8th place for the Geometry team and Ritvik Joshi (’16) and Nhien Tran-Nguyen (’16) placed 8th and 10th, respectively, for the Pre-Calculus team.

For Johnson, winning first place was a new and exhilarating accomplishment.

“It was my 1st time receiving an award for Mu Alpha Theta. It was really exciting for our high school team to place so high,” said Johnson, “I was surprised I did so well. I didn’t take it too seriously, I just had fun.”

Joshi said his favorite part of the competition was the team event because he was able to socialize while doing math, two very important components of the club.

The club’s secretary, Nhu-y Nguyen (’16), said, “Beating a lot of schools is very rewarding. We still have a desire to improve. We want to place 1st… and beat Hillsborough!”

The Mu Alpha Theta club, along with the rest of the students and staff at Robinson, is very pleased with their accomplishment and can’t wait to see what the future holds. As the team looks ahead to the future, they hope to continue along the path of success, improving both as a team as well as individuals. Through dedication and teamwork, Robinson’s math team is sure to be a strong competitor at next year’s Math Bowl.
