1. Mid-term Elections in the United States: On Tuesday, November 4, the Republican Party kept their control of the House of Representatives and gained the majority in the Senate. In Florida’s gubernatorial race, Governor Rick Scott beat Former Governor Charlie Crist by a 1.4% margin.
2. Hope for Women in Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia’s royal-appointed Shura Council suggested altering the ban on women driving this week. The new law would allow women over 30 to drive before 8:00pm. Although clearly stringent (the proposed law prohibits the driver from wearing make-up), the fact that such a law has been suggested shows progress for the women of Saudi Arabia
3. Supreme Court Will Hear Obamacare Case: The Supreme Court announced that it will hear a case challenging the federal subsidies portion of the Affordable Care Act. This will be the most serious challenge to the law since 2012, when the Supreme Court declared it to be constitutional. A decision against the subsidies could affect millions of Americans.
4. Passenger Train Derails in Algiers, Algeria: The three front cars of a passenger train derailed Tuesday morning while changing tracks. The train was making way for an express train traveling in the same direction. So far, 1 dead and 65 injured have been reported.
5. Military Control in Burkina Faso: After leading the nation for 27 years, President Blaise Compaoré, stepped down from office. Violent protest resulting from his attempts to extend his power caused Compaoré to issue his resignation. Former colonial power, France, encourages the nation to move towards democratic elections. For the time being, Gen. Honoré Traoré, has taken control.
