A severe weather warning was issued this morning for Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas County. Although the watch expired at 11:15 a.m., a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Bay area until 5 p.m.

The combination of strong winds of around 20-30 mph and showers made changing classes a challenge for students in outdoor hallways. They were advised by administration not to walk in the courtyard or any open area for safety reasons.

The powerful storms at noon resulted in traffic safety concerns for later in the day. Student drivers were careful to avoid accidents.

Kendall Runyan (’16) practices basic safety whenever she drives in difficult conditions.

“When I drive home I primarily put on my seatbelt, and then while driving I refrain from looking at my phone or texting,” Runyan said. “Most of the time I will put it in the back seat so I can get to it when I have my purse or my backpack.”

Assistant Principal for Student Affairs, Amanda Batista, also suggests that students drive slowly and with more caution when navigating slippery roads.

This weekend is expected to have clear skies and chilly temperatures.
