The Great American Teach-In is an annual event that brings experts from different parts of our community in order to share ideas, knowledge and inspiration to future generations. It’s an amazing opportunity where young minds meet face to face with professionals on different fields and hopefully get some idea of what to do for their future, providing real-world perspective on various careers and interest.
To start off is Genevieve Kuria, student manager for the EAP program at Hillsborough community college, which offers to help foreign students get ready for college level classes.
“I think there are a lot of immigrants students and they need to have some hope that there is something for them after high school, and I’m here to give that possibility,” Kuria said.
Another few programs that HCC offers can come from the arts, which is presented by Arlene Jacobs. These programs include visual arts like photography or painting, performance arts like dance or theater, and even music like vocals and band.
“Arts is unrepresented in a lot of schools especially in Florida, and this is a good way to wider present opportunities of the arts to students,” Jacobs said.
Next is Alex Leiva, presenting the Army, which is a solid and popular options for students who plan on being in the military.
“Army is the biggest branch, and with that comes more opportunities and benefits for everyone in different types of fields,” Leiva said.
Finally, Marc Makholm, presented some insight on his job as county court judge as well as informing students on other jobs like being a lawyer.
“It’s never too young to get an idea of what you want to do when you get older, and figuring it out is hard enough, it’s nice to have someone experienced to give pointers,” Makholm said.
These are a few of the many presented at Robinson, giving insight of their everyday lives and opportunities for students who may be interested. The Great American Teach-In is an event beyond learning curriculums, it’s a way for students to connect with real-world professionals to help build a path towards their future.
