On Thursday, March 12, Robinson High’s French Club hosted its annual fundraiser, a movie night where students gathered to watch a film and help raise money for the club’s future events and cultural activities.
They recently traveled to Orlando to participate in “Congres” or French Congress, where they tested their knowledge on both the French language and French culture, proving the club’s potential. Due to their immense success this year, they are already in preparation for next year’s Congres, and to be able to attend, it all comes down to the fundraising.
In order to uphold the club’s mission of celebrating French culture while also providing an entertaining experience, the club chose to present the film Chocolat. Starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Banoche, this movie follows a single mother who opens a chocolate shop in a small French village during the Lent season, hoping to revive the lives of townspeople and the French community.
“We chose Chocolat because [with the exception of certain French dialogues] it was easier to understand, and we thought it would be easier to make a theme around it with the food we offered,” sophomore Tessa Chae said.
To match the film, the event’s theme included many chocolate-centered treats, such as hot chocolate and, of course, French native food, crepes, which further added to the experience.
Despite some technical difficulties, such as not having a DVD player to properly run the movie, the club found a way to overcome the obstacle and put on an unforgettable night, demonstrating their dedication to making the event enjoyable for everyone who attended.
“I think the night went very well, a lot of people showed up, allowing us to raise the most amount of money for the future of our club,” Abhi Ummedisetti (‘28) said.
Overall, the night proved to be a success, as the club fundraised enough to support their future competitions while also creating a night where students at Robinson got to enjoy learning more about French culture with their friends.
