Today was Groundhog Day. But let’s be honest: does Groundhog Day really matter? I don’t think anyone above the age of five actually thinks that a small furry mammal determines the seasons, and I don’t really get the point.

Just last year at Groundhog Day an innocent groundhog was dropped, leading to its death. Why chance a repeat in continuing this holiday that no one seems to care about?

Living in Florida, we deal with constant heat year round, regardless of what Punxsutawney Phil says.

“A really cute animal gets held up, [and] terrorized [by] people crowding around it, it’s sad actually,” said Stephanie Wolfe (’18) about her thoughts on Groundhog day.

Ashley Osiason (’18) agreed with Wolfe on the general uselessness of the holiday.

“It’s not that important to me, it means nothing to nobody,” she said.

Personally, I don’t care about Groundhog Day. All it does is scare a poor animal, sometimes even injuring it. The only people that tend to pay attention to Groundhog Day are the elderly and government officials. Groundhog Day should be taken out of the main rotation of holidays and out of the news cycle. Let’s be honest here, very few people will miss it when it is gone. There are a lot of issues and a lot of newsworthy issues going on in the world everyday worth covering, and I certainly do not think one groundhog should underscore that.
