Christmas In November?

It is ninety degrees outside, it’s not the time to be jolly.

A festive Christmas tree put up too early.

I am a firm believer in leaving Christmas decorations for Dec. At the risk of sounding like a scrooge, if it’s ninety degrees out, there shouldn’t be a single fake snowman in sight. Lately, I’ve been seeing it all: Christmas lawn decorations, Christmas trees going up and some people already baking their favorite Christmas cookies. Of course, if decorating for Christmas earlier makes you happy go for it, but let’s discuss why I consider it tacky.

Christmas is something that many people, including me, get excited about. It’s very easy to fall into the Christmas spirit prematurely, and many have been. I’ve seen many people have been rushing to decorate as soon as the day after Halloween, some even skipping the Halloween decorations altogether which is just unacceptable. I believe everyone should wait at least until after Thanksgiving before you bring out the tinsel, wait until the appropriate time until you embrace the holiday cheer.

After having the festive winter decorations up for a while, you also get tired of it. For me, I feel like it ends up getting boring and they lose their emphasis as well, given you’ve been seeing it for almost two months beforehand. When it’s the beginning of Nov. and you already have your blow-up Santa sleigh and reindeer in your front yard, just know your neighbors, and I, are judging you.

Now, even I can’t deny the excitement I get when I walk into stores like Target and hear some of the iconic Mariah Cary Christmas songs playing and it’s defiantly taking all my self-restraint to not buy a mini-Christmas tree. Despite how happy the décor makes me, I’ve learned from past years that the longer the decorations are up the less of that specific Christmas happiness they give you when it’s actually time for the holiday.

It can almost feel like some people are skipping the fall decorating together, the warm colors, the amazing food and the time spent with family should be celebrated fully with decorations like many enthusiastically do for Christmas. My other reason for dislike of premature Christmas decorating is the overshadowing of thanksgiving.

It’s important to remember that Thanksgiving is one of the better holidays and it shouldn’t be skipped over or thought of as an afterthought no matter how excited you are for Christmas. Everyone should take a moment and enjoy the season of thanks and then embrace the season of giving before your full-force decorating begins.
