The illustration is the visual representation of all that’s good with candy canes.

What comes to mind when one thinks of the holiday season? The beautiful Florida snow, perhaps the farm of slowly dying trees at Home Depot? No, the delicious concoction of sugar glucose and red 40 dye that we call the candy cane.

The humble candy cane. It symbolizes all that is pure and joyous of a wonderful Christmas time. They are great for you, great for your family and great for the holiday season. They are simply wonderful due to their delectable taste, the many benefits in health and their innateness to the Christmas spirit.

With many kinds of candy canes, they serve as a very multi-functional candy with many flavors. Root beer, citrus and caramel are all staples alongside the candy cane’s most commonplace flavor: peppermint. The taste of the candy cane is comparable to the swirled delight of sweetness, with a sharp minty finish. Truly, the most wonderful of flavors is the original.

There are numerous health benefits to the highly alluded candy cane.  Regarding most of these candies, they are only 50 calories and 10 grams of sugar. The small treat can squash cravings, ease headaches and even treat bad breath.

It is also apparent that candy canes can also cure literal cancer. There are many evaluations proving this highly general and even implausible statement. Along with all this, the candy cane does not discriminate against anyone. Even the vein of the world, the notorious vegan, is free to relish in the completely artificial material that is the candy cane.

Candy canes also symbolize the true spirit of the holidays. Whenever one thinks of the holidays, nothing would be more fitting in a Christmas stocking or the decks of a drawer than the humble candy cane. The shape of the striped candy represents that of J, for Jesus Christ; the treat has always had its roots in the Christmas spirit.

No other candy can come close to the impact this subtle Christmas treat has had on our fabric of society. With its amazing flavors, robust health benefits and even its innateness to the holiday’s spirit, candy canes are merely comparable to the bible in grandeur. In other words, candy canes can certainly compete.

About the Contributor
Jordan De La Cruz
Jordan De La Cruz, Staff Writer
Jordan De La Cruz is a junior at Robinson and a staff writer for Knight Writers. This is his first year on the staff. A true artist, De La Cruz partakes in many artistic hobbies including playing drums, guitar and even painting. "Anything creative I love to take part in," De La Cruz said. With an affinity for editing videos and having already written a few full-length stories, De La Cruz's passions for newspaper extend beyond the class. He felt joining newspaper would benefit his interests and wanted to expand his already formidable writing abilities. "As a writer I felt like this would be a super fun way to expand my influences with writing but also with the video editing," De La Cruz said. "I already have a good past in video editing that I think doing more of it would be great." While De La Cruz enjoys the opportunity to express his writing abilities, video creation is another thing that drew De La Cruz to newspaper. He looks forward to making content for the ongoing "Man on the street" videos under the Knight Mic series. De La Cruz looks forward to being able to build on the foundation left by previous classes and hopes to expand the coverage of Knight Mic videos beyond pep rallies and RHS sporting events. "I'm excited to be a host, be able to put my charisma on the screen," De La Cruz said. "Just being able to make videos with two friends of mine, I'm really excited." Never staying in one school for long, De La Cruz looks forward to finishing his final years at Robinson and leaving his mark on the school as a Knight Writer. "I used to move every year, but this is the only time I'm going to be able to finish the next three years at the same high school," De La Cruz said. "I'm super hopeful ... [that] I'll be able to have some sort of mark on the school." (Profile by Yesenia Rosario)
