As many people have noticed in the acting and music industries, everyone has become extremely thin, to the point that it’s starting to worry a lot of people. This could send the wrong message to celebrities’ younger audience, where looking a certain size or having a specific body type may lead to an abundance of eating disorders.
In recent years, movements promoting body positivity and self acceptance seemed to challenge the unrealistic standards. However, the growing visibility of extremely thin bodies in Hollywood suggests that those messages may be fading. When celebrities are constantly being praised for weight loss or physical appearance, it reinforces the idea that thinness is the ideal body type. For students and young viewers who are still developing their sense of self and who they are, these expectations can create pressure to meet impossible standards rather than encouraging a healthy relationship with their bodies.
With celebrities losing weight at an alarming rate, it can also contribute to a significant increase in eating disorders. As more unrealistic standards become visible to the public, individuals who are already vulnerable may feel pressured to continue to restrict diets, overexercise or engage in harmful behaviors to achieve said appearance. For those currently struggling with eating disorders, constant exposure to extremely visible bones from their favorite celebrities can be especially damaging, making recovery even more difficult. This type of environment not only increases the risks of developing an eating disorder, but it can also deepen the physical, emotional and psychological impact on those already affected.
Growing up, body positivity was not a thing and to see body acceptance was an amazing thing for our generation and to see celebrities start to go back to insane skinny trends, can defeat the purpose of what they are promoting.
The promotion of extreme thinness in the entertainment industry can have harmful effects on young audiences, the reinforcing of unrealistic beauty standards and increasing the risk of eating disorders. To protect future generations, it is important to promote body diversity and focus on health and self acceptance rather than appearance. It is important to know that body trends are just trends.
