Homes are a place to be comfortable and to get away from society. It should be warm, welcoming and somewhere you enjoy most. But how can we do that if home doesn’t feel like home? Or look like it? Modern-day homes don’t have the comfortable, at-home feeling anymore because they are designed to look expensive, impressive and modern. In contrast with popular opinion, I think it actually just makes them look ugly.
For example, in the right image, this house is supposed to be modern- but to me, it just looks like a bunch of boxes stacked on top of one another. Where modern design is supposed to add a creative touch and an accelerated style, it lacks originality. For many of these homes, the architecture makes the homes look boxy and uniform.
This kind of architecture makes homes look overly professional and serious, like some form of office building. Homes have a cool, neutral color scheme now. It doesn’t have that warm, welcoming look to it- instead it’s quite intimidating and too elite.
New style homes are fancy and create a rich or wealthy atmosphere. The atmosphere sets the mood of the home, and it isn’t very flexible in these homes. It’s not worth having a modern home when you feel you need to maintain the high status vibe all the time, it feels as if your own home won’t allow you to have some leisure time. While in a house built traditionally, it adapts to your life and what you’re feeling. It’s an everything house.
The traditional way of making homes is like the image on the left; they may have cozy details like triangular roof tops, chimneys, large trees in the front yard – like an oak – so that there will be nice shade. Another thing is windows that do not connect to one another, but are big enough to let the light into the house and the outside environment being visible- not so big and close together where everyone outside the home can see everything going on inside.
Homes should feel like one of the family, they define the atmosphere and the personalities of all those who live in it. If you are a very professional person and a workaholic, then I could see a modern-style home fitting your personality. But for everyone else, a home that’s original and with lots of personality is the way to go.
When buying a house, take into consideration whether it’s better to have a “home” or a bunch of decorated Amazon boxes mashed together.
