ISSUE 1: Can’t Get Kenough of the Homecoming Pep Rally

The Barbie-themed Homecoming pep rally was filled with games, performances from students and teachers and much more.

Every year before homecoming, a pep rally is held to announce the homecoming court before the King and Queen are coronated at the football game. On Friday, Oct. 6, students and teachers gathered together in the gymnasium for the Barbie-themed Homecoming pep rally. The stands were filled with all shades of pink from students showing school spirit in preparation for the Homecoming football game later that night against the Freedom Patriots.

To get students on their feet and filled with spirit, Robinson’s very own Spirit Boys came out and put on a Barbie-themed performance in stylish Barbie attire. Their routine consisted of choreographed dances and stunts.

Tyler Curry (’24) enjoys his ability as a Spirit Boy to get the crowd hype and have fun with friends.

“[A Spirit Boy] is someone that is able to hype up the pep rallies and being positive energy to the school,” Curry said. “[Being a Spirit Boy] means being a part of a fun group of guys to work towards a shared goal and doing my best to make school a more fun environment.”

Though it was difficult to follow, Robinson’s cheerleaders came and put on a great Barbie themed performance, but unlike the boys, included a whole new routine of stunting and dancing. They danced alone to “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua and “Dance the Night Away” by Dua Lipa.

To follow along with the Barbie theme, the Kultural Dance club danced alongside teachers including Journalism Teacher Nancy Webster, Chef Mitchell Smithey, IB Biology Teacher Tiffany Oliver, Spanish Teacher Siara Espejo and Theater Teacher Maureen Pelamati. They had amusing choreography and got students off their feet to cheer their favorite teachers on.

The first student participating activity was the inflatable hamster balls. Two students of opposing classes were to gear up in their blown up ball and run at each other until one knocks the other down to the ground. This got the crowd going and resulted in Tyrone Carlton (’27) as the winner.

Additional games consisted of a balloon pop relay between two students from each grade, where they had to pop two balloons while taking turns sitting on the balloon in each others lap and the classic Red Light, Green Light.

“All my friends mentally and physically pushed me to go and participate so I did,” said Ayan Nallamshetty (’25), winner of Red-Light, Green Light. “I really enjoyed it when I won because is was able to represent the Junior class and have fun at the same time.”

To conclude the afternoon, Student Government Association (SGA) Junior Class President, Nate Clement (’25) commenced the announcement of the 2023 Homecoming court winners in a luxurious beard and trench coat.

Freshmen Count and Countess are Jala Hymes and Amir Hosni.

Sophomore Dutch and Duchess are Liam Dobbins, Jazmine Rodriguez and Jasmyn Mitchner.

Junior Prince and Princess are Joey Treviño and Sofia Scott.

“I ran for [Homecoming Court] this year because I had a good feeling that I could win and it left me with a lot of room to get creative on my campaigning,” Treviño said.

The pep rally ended with the traditional class chant, which is lead by IB Math Teacher and RHS Basketball Coach Steven Smith, only this time it ended with a twist. While there was a tie between Juniors and Seniors, for once, the juniors reigned victorious.

Anticipation built as the pep rally came to a close, with the announcement of Homecoming King and Queen being held later that night during halftime at the football game with school spirit at an all time high.

Yesenia Rosario
Yesenia Rosario, News & Features Editor
Yesenia Rosario is a junior at Robinson and the News & Features Editor of  Knight Writers. This is her second year on staff and her first year as an editor.  Rosario has a deep fondness for the community that journalism has built for her, leading her to return to the staff for a second year.  "What brings me back is the community and the work, it’s very great. It’s very easy but fun at the same time," Rosario said.  Although busy with her academics, Rosario manages to find time for hobbies; she especially enjoys baking and being with friends. Rosario also appreciates a wide variety of media, particularly the essence of Jordan Peele's movies. Currently, “Coraline” is ranked as one of her favorite movies due to its more dark and irreverent tone.  “It's not that I don't lean over any other genres of movies, it's just that I think that thrillers and creepy movies have you on the edge of your seat more, they could be more interesting," Rosario said. "More can be done with a lesser timeframe, rather than like two-hour movies, and though they're good, they're pretty lengthy, so I think that horror and thriller movies have so much content in a short amount of time." Being a movie and music enthusiast, her favorite section to write is A&E. She often finds herself gravitating towards sections that allow her to editorialize.  “I prefer writing album reviews over any other, because it's something I enjoy writing about and giving my opinion on and it gives me a reason to listen to music for fun, rather than having to write lengthy feature stories or any informative story that aren't as fun to write," Rosario said.  Rosario hopes that her love for writing will continue to play a role in her future, even after high school. “One of the reasons I like journalism is that you’re able to choose and write about what you’d like and I think that’s pretty cool," Rosario said.  Profile by (Jordan De La Cruz)
Araya stearns
Araya stearns, Senior Staff Writer
Araya Stearns is a senior at Robinson and a senior staff writer for Knight Writers. This is her second year on staff. An essential part of Stearns is her love for sports. At Robinson, she plays both flag football and softball. She loves the flag team she's a part of, aiding her love of the sport overall. The same applies to softball, which Stearns has been involved in since her early years. "Softball, I've been playing since, like, the age of four, so meeting new people and having more friends due to softball is a really big thing for me," Stearns said. After her time at Robinson, Stearns plans to keep moving forward on the softball track, hoping to pursue the sport throughout college and strive for the pro-leagues. Wanting to stay active even after college, a career in physical therapy or training is in her sights. Besides sports, Stearns loves her share of country music. Artists like Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen are common in her everyday playlist. Like many right now, Stearns has been enjoying the new volume of "Stranger Things," eager for the new season to come out in her senior year. Dialing down on the intensity, her favorite movies are typically from Disney, considering that she's surrounded by younger siblings. She finds movies like "Luca" fun to watch by herself or with others. This year, Stearns wants to keep her focus on the sports section, mainly attending sports games and taking pictures for our galleries. She loves the atmosphere of any sports game, keeping her ambitious to improve her photography skills throughout her junior year. (Profile by Faith Rowland)

Ashlyn Miller, Sports Editor
Ashlyn Miller is a junior at Robinson and the Sports Editor of Knight Writers. This is her second year on staff and first year as an editor. Miller's favorite part of journalism is taking photos of all of the sports at Robinson and improving her photography skills. "We don't exactly have press at Robinson so it's rewarding to me to take photos of people doing what they love," Miller said. Outside of the journalism room, Miller stays involved in school with an array of hobbies. She enjoys staying involved in school by participating in swimming, photography and orchestra. She enjoys playing the violin and loves learning new pieces. "If you're able to make the violin sound good, it's a such rewarding accomplishment for such a difficult instrument," Miller said. Miller also likes spending time with her dog in her past time. Out of cats or dogs, she instantaneously chose dogs. "I prefer dogs. I actually own a German Shepherd named Leia and she's the light of my life, but I have nothing against cats," Miller said. Prepared for the future, she plans to attend journalism school, preferably at Duke University and join their ROTC program.  Miller is passionate about media and sports although how competitive positions are. "I want to specialize in the media realm and possibly be a sports commentator for ESPN," Miller said. "I love watching, covering and even playing sports because of the environment that surrounds them and the gratification that comes with doing well." (Profile by Briana Garcia)
