The Cross Country boys and girls teams participated in the Steven Villareal Memorial Cross Country Race this past weekend. The girls Varsity and JV teams each placed 3rd overall in their divisions. The boys JV team also placed 3rd while the boys’ Varsity team placed 1st.

The Varsity boys captain, John Slife (’15) thought his team performed well.

“The last meet we did fantastic. We were looking pretty strong. We had four guys who placed in the top 10, so overall we dominated.”

The girls Varsity captain, Isabel Hanewicz (’17), also thought that the girls’ team performed well at the meet.

“Overall, I think we had a really good meet. We beat all of the teams in our division. The top two teams are not in our district, so we do not have to compete against them in the post season.”

Although the girls performed well at the meet, Hanewicz believes that the team still has a way to go. “This season is our building season because we lost 6 of our 7 girls from Varsity last yera. We are just trying to build for next year.”

Slife also believes that his team can still improve.

“There is always room for improvement. We’re trying to bring the teams’ times closer together, so that there is less room for other runners to get in between us.”

This weekend the team is competing in one of the biggest meets of their season, the North Port Invitational. There are over 30 teams, and it will be the most competitive meet of their season.
